Sting & The Police - Roxanne

Roxanne

Even though I'm not a Police fan, I do enjoy this song. The meaning is very special. The meaning is that the girl, Roxanne, does not have to sell her body and that the guy who's singing this song is in love with her. The fact that the percentage of girls who are doing this for, whatever reasons, is that they don't have to. Why result into doing something like this? O.K., maybe she disappointed her parents one way or another, but to sell her body? One thing is for sure and that is that parents will always be there for their children. They love their children unconditionally. The guy in this song is trying to tell this girl that even though in her eyes, it may seem like her parents don't love her. They do. He is trying to reassure her that it will all be O.K. and that she can always go to him for support and love if it is what she needs. It is such a deep message from such a, what most people would call a simple song, but the message is so important. Basically in this song Roxanne is a prostitute. In fact, there are many cultures and cities of the world that have used red lights throughout history, to advertise prostitution. This is where we get the term "red-light district". The lyrics "Put on the red light" is a reference to this.
Sting sings the part of the young man who has fallen in love with this prostitute. The young man is pleading with all his heart for her to give this lifestyle up. He says the hooker lifestyle is wrong, and that she doesn't need to demean herself anymore. He wants to take her away from all this, and wants her all to himself. Hence, "I won't share you with another boy" He loves her so much regardless of what she is, and hopefully what she "was" if he takes her in and lets him into her heart. He loves her so much and is trying to get the message out to her.

This song has parallels for anyone who has been in love with someone who might not be a literal whore, but is letting themselves be used and abused by life or people around them.

Even though it may seem as though you are not loved, there is always someone in this world that seems so big, but which is in fact very small compared to all the galaxies and the skies, that is thinking of you. Somewhere someone is thinking of you. The star or stars, that you stare at sometimes at night, someone else in this small world is looking at the same one(s).

And here of course are the lyrics:
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Those days are over
You don't have to sell your body to the night
Roxanne
You don't have to wear that dress tonight
Walk the streets for money
You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right

Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light

Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light

I loved you since I knew you
I wouldn't talk down to you
I have to tell you just how I feel
I won't share you with another boy
I know my mind is made up
So put away your makeup
Told you once I won't tell you again
It's a bad way

Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne
You don't have to put on the red light

You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
You don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
Roxanne put on the red light
